There were two main tribes which inhabited the territory of Argentina. The tribe of Diaguita settled on the northern part and Guarani - on southern and eastern parts of the country. During the history of Argentina its people used to fight various invaders: preferably Spanish and British. The capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, was founded in 1536. For most of the Colonial period the city remained the major port. After a tiring fight with English invaders Argentina became the first independent country in Latin America. The declaration of independence was signed on July 9th, 1816. Then began the period of civil wars within Argentina. The main cause of the growth of the population was immigration from Europe. The country continues to prosper until 1930 - the beginning of the world financial crisis. Argentina returned to democracy with president Raul Alfonsin who was elected in 1983. The inflation was stabilized, the economy was improved.
